What is Mind?

Wikipedia - The mind is a set of cognitive faculties including consciousness, perception, thinking, judgement, language and memory. It is usually defined as the faculty of an entity's thoughts and consciousness.

"This world that we live in is really the movie screen of your mind. Whatever it is that you think and feel will be projected onto the vision of your mind, and that is what you will see and experience in life. - Maria Portas

Screen Analogy

Thoughts - appear on the screen of mind as 1. Verbal - words 2. Audio - some sound 3. Image - picture and 4. Video - with motion. These thoughts might come in response to any sensory input like what you saw, heard etc or May just appear out of no where. Something will be going on the screen all the time. Even in sleep, this screen is on and something will be happening. Thoughts are main products of mind in action. Screen is unchanging (you), movie that goes on the screen is stream of your thoughts. Knower or viewer of the movie can decide what to focus and what to let go or simply watch all of them without getting involved with any part of the movie.

Feelings and Emotions -  when we follow any thought, and think more about a specific one, the thought will become strong and pulls more from past experiences/memories and create feelings and emotions - good or bad. By choice we can chose to pic a thought or leave it pass. Depending upon the strength of thought, emotions and feelings it caries - we may be dragged along by thought. These strong thoughts often pass through filters of "Intellect" or budhi (reasoning mind) and ego (self identity". Intellect or Ego might support/strengthen or weaken some thoughts. Act of engaging with thoughts makes them strong and they eventually create actions, reality.

Mind chatter -Mind chatter is not only due to thoughts coming and going in mind but also our engagement with the thoughts.. In sleep thoughts are still on  - on the screen of mind. We call them as dreams. You can imagine your sleep state as a viewer (you... not sleeping) watching whatever goes on the screen. Thoughts are on... but no engagement with them (as you are sleeping). Hence it is one way interactions. Someone watching the thoughts but not reacting to them. One way to calm the mind, mind chatter is to create a situation of sleep like- where we are watching everything that is going on like  mute spectator. What is sleeping when we are sleeping? conscious mind? Is conscious mind responsible for chatter? Conscious mind that does all reasoning and helps day today activities can also cause chatter - engagement with thoughts?

Role of awareness - One other theory (from Dhandapani.org ) - mind is a vast continuum of thoughts/areas. When we say some thought has come - it is our awareness moving to that thought. Awareness like torch. We (the atman) is person holding a torch light illuminating various thoughts at our will. When torch stays on one thing/thought for long time - we say we are concentrating on that. So instead of saying thoughts come and go - thoughts appear and stay, its our awareness that keeps wandering from thought to thought. A thought that does not get noticed by awareness in a specific interval of time - dies.

Mind Recursion - "Thought of freedom from mind itself generated in the mind - Osho".  Mind thinks about mind and contemplates about it. It aims to control/calm down. This thought itself is a product of mind.
